Why Effort Feels Heavier Than It Used To

Why Effort Feels Heavier Than It Used To

There was a time when you could simply decide to do something—and do it.

You worked hard. You handled responsibilities. You pushed through difficult days and somehow found enough energy to keep moving.

But lately, ordinary things feel heavier.

Starting a project requires more effort. Small decisions feel strangely tiring. Tasks you once completed without thinking now require you to talk yourself into beginning.

And perhaps the hardest part is remembering the person you used to be.

You wonder: “Why can't I do what I used to do?”

Sometimes the answer is not laziness, weakness, or lack of discipline.

💡 Sometimes you have been carrying more than you realize for longer than you realize.

Your Capacity Has Been Carrying a Hidden Load

Effort does not happen in isolation.

👉 Imagine carrying a backpack everywhere you go. One small weight gets added every time you experience prolonged stress, financial pressure, uncertainty, responsibility, disappointment, conflict, or lack of rest.

At first, you barely notice.

Eventually, even climbing an ordinary staircase feels difficult.

The staircase did not change.

The weight you are carrying did.

This is why comparing today's capacity with yesterday's can be unfair.

💡 You may be asking today's exhausted mind and body to perform like the version of you that was carrying much less.

Scripture acknowledges that human strength has limits:

Psalm 73:26 (KJV)
“My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.”

Being tired does not mean you have stopped being capable.

It may mean your capacity needs restoration.

Chronic Stress Makes Ordinary Tasks Feel Expensive

Short periods of stress can help us respond quickly.

But when stress becomes constant, the system rarely receives the signal that it can fully relax.

Your mind remains occupied.

What needs to happen tomorrow?
What did I forget?
Who needs something from me?
What problem needs solving next?

👉 That background processing consumes energy. So when you finally sit down to work on something important, you may already be partially depleted.

The task seems harder even though the task itself has not changed.

Decision Fatigue Adds Up

Modern life also requires an enormous number of small decisions.

What should I answer?
What should I prioritize?
Should I respond now?
What should I buy?
What should I cook?
What needs attention first?

Individually, these decisions seem insignificant. Collectively, they create mental friction.

Eventually, even choosing what to watch or what to eat can feel exhausting.

That is not necessarily indecisiveness.

Sometimes your brain simply wants relief from having to choose one more thing.

You May Be Functioning Without Recovering

Another reason effort feels heavier is that many of us rest without truly recovering.

We stop working but keep scrolling.
We sit down but continue answering messages.
We go on vacation while checking email.
We lie in bed while consuming another hour of information.

The body stopped moving.

The mind never stopped processing.

💡 True recovery requires moments when you are not producing, solving, responding, comparing, or consuming.

Even Jesus recognized the need to step away from constant demands:

Mark 6:31 (KJV)
“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”

Rest is not something you earn after completely exhausting yourself.

Sometimes rest is what allows you to continue faithfully.

Stop Turning Exhaustion Into a Character Judgment

When effort becomes difficult, many people become harsh with themselves.

I used to be stronger.
I should be doing more.
Why can't I get myself together?

But shame rarely restores energy.

Instead of asking: “What's wrong with me?”

try asking: “What has been weighing on me?”

That question creates compassion without removing responsibility.

Perhaps you need better sleep.
Perhaps you need boundaries.
Perhaps you need to grieve something you never had time to process.
Perhaps you need fewer commitments rather than better productivity techniques.

Or perhaps you may simply need some rest and say: “I'm tired.”

Start Smaller Than Your Pride Wants To

When capacity is low, do not demand enormous momentum from yourself.

Take the walk.
Answer one email.
Clean one room.
Work for fifteen focused minutes.
Pray one honest prayer.

Small actions are not insignificant when you are rebuilding strength.

God does not despise your small beginnings.

And you do not need enough strength for the next six months today.

You need grace for today.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness ...”

Sometimes weakness teaches us something strength allowed us to forget:

We were never meant to carry life entirely through our own power.

A Prayer for When Everything Feels Heavy

Dear Heavenly Father,

You know how tired I am, even in the places I cannot explain to anyone else. You see the responsibilities I carry, the thoughts that follow me into quiet moments, the worries I rarely speak about, and the effort it sometimes takes just to keep showing up. Lord, when I look at who I used to be and wonder where my strength went, protect my heart from shame. Remind me that You do not love me according to how much I accomplish.

Father, please lighten what has become heavy within me. Give me wisdom to know what I need to carry and courage to release what I do not. Restore the strength that stress has drained, the peace that worry has interrupted, and the joy that responsibility has slowly crowded out. Teach me how to truly rest—not merely to stop moving, but to become quiet enough to receive from You again.

And when I do not have strength for the whole journey, give me enough for the next step. When I cannot run, help me walk. When I cannot walk quickly, help me remain faithful. And when I feel like I cannot move at all, Lord, hold me there until strength returns. Remind me that I do not have to prove anything to You. I am Your child before I am productive, successful, useful, or strong.

Carry what I cannot carry, Lord. Renew what has become weary, and teach my heart to rest safely in You.

In Jesus' name, Amen. 🙏
